Dry needling is a treatment technique used by trained physiotherapists to help reduce muscle tension, pain and movement restrictions. It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific muscle trigger points to relieve pain and restore normal muscle function.

Dry needling can be effective in the management of a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including muscle tightness, myofascial pain, sporting injuries, headaches, and persistent or recurrent pain conditions. It is often used in conjunction with other physiotherapy treatments such as exercise, manual therapy and education to optimise outcomes. While some people may experience brief discomfort during treatment, it is generally well tolerated and followed by a reduction in pain and stiffness.

Dry needling vs acupuncture

Dry needling is based on western medicine philosophy and targets specific trigger points and areas of muscle dysfunction identified upon examination. Acupuncture, on the other hand, is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on restoring the flow of energy (Qi) through specific points along meridians to influence overall health and wellbeing. While both techniques may help reduce pain, dry needling is specifically aimed at improving muscle function and movement as part of a broader physiotherapy rehabilitation program.
